Or have they? As someone who has spent a number of years preparing the definitive biography of actor George Reeves, I approached this film with great trepidation. And why would a cute blonde actress hang out with a poor, unattractive, rude detective?

His low rent life, and the second case he was investigating with the crazy man who ultimately murders his wife, were unnecessary and distracting. All I can say is that the makers of "Hollywoodland" came as close as is humanly possible in the real world of movie-making to achieving exactly what I would have hoped for -- an examination of George Reeves's life and death that is true to the times he lived in, true to the kind of man I found him to be, and as true as possible to the most likely scenarios that have been projected to explain his death.

As my mother passed in front of the TV vacuuming, she switched off the TV and told me to go back outside and play because she had to clean up for the guests. When Reeves body is found, Simo looks into the apparent suicide and starts to uncover very disturbing things including the torrid affair Reeves was having with Toni Mannix (Diane Lane). He and Diane Lane re-introduce the idea of stardom to film making. While Adrien Brody delivers a good performance, the other characters with the exception of Bob Hoskins deliver wooden performances. 13 out of 17 found this helpful. When I first began hearing about this movie, the premise, as I understood it, was that George Reeves'apparent suicide was in fact a murder, heading into the movie with that in mind, I was a little surprised, although not terribly disappointed to find that this movie is less about a murder mystery and more about man trying to find his path to stardom. Instead, when the live of George Reeves was detailed, albeit in small already known doses, the audience leaned forward desiring more knowledge. Let it be known that my rather stingy rating for this film does not stem from any dislike of film noir or neo-noir. It’s a school year like no other. I cannot tell you what a delight is is to go see a film that I have heard nothing about and then sit in the theater totally and thoroughly engaged in a serious film that manages to convince the audience that the art of film making is alive and well. Was this review helpful? For every on the spot classic like "LA Confidential" there are a number of turkeys like this that try to match it for quality and interest. Major characters smoke incessantly, drink frequently (to the point of drunkenness). Common Sense is a nonprofit organization. A great cast wasted on a poor script.

Also, as a kid I was absolutely nuts about the original TV series "Adventures of Superman" starring George Reeves. The story is beautifully told with a nicely flowing back and forth between George Reeves life up until his death and 'independent investigator' Simo's search for the truth about that fateful night.

I saw this at the Big Newport, a huge theater, and only about 15 other people were in the giant auditorium to watch it with us. After doing some light research, I decided to take the dive in and give it a try.

Hollywoodland is one of the nicest surprises of the late summer lull between blockbuster seasons, a smart period mystery--cum--character study--cum--bitter parable on the lures and liabilities of life in its titular locale. The guy was Superman.
