We were always friends and very close. It's called "Elvis Live 1969." And it was - for me, it was great.GROSS: Was it easier to bend the notes - to bend the string to bend the note?BURTON: Oh, you could bend the string clear across the neck, yeah (laughter).GROSS: Well, let me reintroduce you here. What are your memories of playing this for the first time?BURTON: It was fun. Well Chip Young and I were just sitting in Studio B and playing around with the melody and both on acoustic guitars. He said, "Do you boys wanna do something on the TV show, maybe do a couple of songs?" I answered the phone and gave it to my wife; she took the call, and I heard her scream. So I went over and opened the case, and I said, no, no, no. So I was a little nervous about playing it. A new record contract with Curb Records was being finalized on the day Rick and his band passed away, and we’ll never know what might have been. We didn't want to get our head chopped off.GROSS: So you kept playing with Elvis from '69 until his death, so you weren't put in a position to watch his health deteriorate. He was - we couldn't get too close because he was moving so fast and kicking and - a little bit of karate there. Fifty years ago, Elvis Presley started performing in concert live on stage for the first time in eight years - eight years of making movies and records. We had fun doing it, you know? James Burton continued to play with Elvis until Elvis' death in 1977. The first two weeks, I decided to only play my Telecaster that my mother and dad bought me and I played on thousands of records.

You could play any style - 'cause I have a light touch. I said, yeah, I was a little nervous about bringing it out onstage. He was a little crazy, you know? You got your first guitar at age 14. I like the way you talk. A música escrita por Mark James ganhou uma versão de Elvis Presley e tornou-se um sucesso instantâneo. What do you think of as being your contribution to what's known as the Bakersfield sound? I see him every now and then; I’ve just been real busy lately. My mother and dad bought my first guitar. And I said - Red West came to me, the Memphis Mafia guy. "So you played on "Ozzie And Harriet" with Ricky Nelson. But when Elvis called me and asked me to put the band together for a 1969 comeback and he said, you know, I watch the "Ozzie And Harriet" TV show, I watch Ricky sing and you play guitar - he said, it's my favorite show. James Burton: No, actually I didn’t, because Rick would do his show first and Jerry Lee’s band would never be backstage until maybe Rick’s closing number. Your parents brought you your first guitar. Jan 1, 2016 - Photo of James BURTON and Elvis PRESLEY, with James Burton on guitar - performing live onstage He just did movies for nine years. Before I went to work with Ricky, I met him. Why can't you see what you're doing to me when you don't believe a word I'm saying? Elvis came in and said, "What is that?" We'll just key off each other and forget the audience. "We had a home out in the valley in Tarzana, out in Canoga Park, so the next day James Kirkland jumped up and ran outside to get the newspaper. And he said, no, no, no, no.

Do you guys want to do this?

And by doing that, the four strings on the banjo, I realized the third string was actually unwound, and I liked it. We were traveling doing sold-out tours just like Elvis, and the screaming kids would yell, "Run over me, Ricky! (SOUNDBITE OF GRAM PARSONS AND EMMYLOU HARRIS SONG, "OOH LAS VEGAS") Transcript provided by NPR, Copyright NPR.Though Pelt can certainly play uptempo with a lot of fire, he also loves to play ballads, including a batch of obscure ones.

My son’s ex-wife called to tell us the news, but I didn’t take the call. What gave you the idea to do that?BURTON: Well, you know, when I got my first Fender Telecaster my mother and dad bought me, the strings were very stiff. We cut a record, a whole album in one weekend, and he would have all the studio guys come up there and stay. And so it would be very exciting 'cause there weren't a lot of shows, particularly, like, sitcoms, that had a rock 'n' roller on performing on the show. Anyone know how I can achieve a similar guitar tone to the one heard on Elvis Presley's "Suspicious Minds?" Elvis might say something onstage and, you know, might embarrass me.But anyway, I played the guitar that night. He said, this is great. The one true friend I thought I'd found - tonight, the bottle let me down. I came out of my dressing room, and I got caught in the middle of those screaming fans.

Describe that first guitar that you had.BURTON: Well, my first guitar actually was when I was 13. But tonight, your memory found me much too sober; couldn't drink enough to keep you off my mind. And he was left-handed - I couldn't play his guitar. You have to come down and check it out. Just when you come out onstage, man, just sing maybe three or four songs just to the band, you know? My friend that was - he was actually the vice president of Fender - called me. It was the heaviest suit I've ever seen. I got a chance to play a little bit of chicken picking.GROSS: Well, we're going to hear "The Bottle Let Me Down." I think he told you that he was afraid that he wasn't going to be able to do it. The whole band, including road manager Donald Clark Russell, guitarist Bobby Neal, bassist Patrick Woodward, drummer Ricky Intveld, and keyboardist Andy Chapin, they were all good friends of mine. But when I saw my first guitar, that Fender Telecaster I wanted, mother took me down there, and she told my dad that night that when he came home from work that I wanted the guitar. This is Ricky Nelson with my guest, James Burton, on guitar.RICKY NELSON: (Singing) I believe what you say when you say you're going steady with nobody else but me. I would tell Rick what I liked and vice versa. And for the fifth and sixth string, I used a - for the A string, I used a normal D string from the guitar.
