His first job in New York was opening boxes of books in Fox and Sutherland's Bookshop in Mount Kisco. There is not one flaw and exceptional beauty. Welcome back. Must it be SO depressing? He studied English and French literature at University College Dublin before graduating with a Master's degree in Modern American Literature.

I read the whole book rather slowly. The water images, the call of the River Shannon, the salmon, the sound of it flowing, the rain - the power of story telling bringing beauty, solace, loss and yet hope. It is a sorry little worm's view of the off-beat of adult pressure, of contemporary strictures and conformity, of sentiment…. A strict report, worthy of sympathy.

Good God!

This is tender and true, and impossible, in its picture of the old hells of young boys, the lonesomeness and tentative attempts to be mature and secure, the awful block between youth and being grown-up, the fright and sickness that humans and their behavior cause the challenging, the dramatization of the big bang. It's a wistful, tender family saga rooted in a dreamily rain-soaked Irish riverside landscape. This book is d-e-p-r-e-s-s-i-n-g!

By Niall Williams. Niall Williams has created poetry out of words and created characters so real they will live on forever.

It was perfect. by

The offense is not absolved by our narrator repeatedly acknowledgingIt's a little depressing to see so many Goodreads reviews lauding the grace of this book's writing.

1408852020 Almost two years ago.I've not finished this book yet, but I am tempted to a mid-read review, partly because I don't want it to end. It was full to the brim with literary references as well as current day politics andI would give that six stars if I could. It is impossible for anyone who loves books not to fall in love with her and her quest to understand her dead father through the books he read and collected. If I was forced to use only one word to describe this novel, it would definitely be "Irish."

I can't say I'm glad I did, as the whole experience left me feeling a bit ambivalent.I contemplated leaving this book unfinished, but decided to stick it out. It’s a family saga, but so much more.

Niall Williams studied English and French Literature at University College Dublin and graduated with a MA in Modern American Literature. It is a love letter to Ireland in all its contradictions, to literature and poetry and family. Good God! Niall Williams writes like an angel - if angels were writers - and he has created a narrator, Ruth Swain, who narrates like an angel - if angels were narrators. If I was forced to use only one word to describe this novel, it would definitely be "Irish." This book is d-e-p-r-e-s-s-i-n-g! In truth, it uses a pretty formulaic trick to evoke resonance and meaning: overwrought run-on sentences interspersed with smirking, percussive declarations. In an utterly stunning way, we the readers are addressed by Ruth and we become part of her story. A very beautiful if imperfect book. Sentences cascade, sweeping and twirling you along so fast you can barely breathe.Oh my god, this book makes me so angry because if you just cut out the repetitive, far too long, cloying middle 80 pages or so where he shows his hand over and over so insistently that I can't help but look at it, it's a gorgeous, gorgeous talented thing full of pain and life and love and erudition and things put just so. It doesn't help that the end tries to close with a hopeful note.

It's not even said what illness she has, though I'm thinking leuke"As It Is in Heaven", was so enjoyable, I wanted to return to another Niall Williams novel - sooner - rather than later. Almost two years ago. These words are from writer 'Niall Williams' of the book 'History of the Rain'. Reading it is like being awash in flood rapids. I think I knew it about 100 pages into the 358-page novel.

This stellar novel was easy--it was a 5-star journey all the way.

The writing was extremely clever…in the acknowledgments Niall Williams said it took 5 years to write and at one point thought of abandoning it. They moved on April 1st to the cottage in west Clare that Chris's grandfather had left eighty years before to find his life in America.“We tell stories. I loved the watery theme, the rain , the rivers, the salmon, even the mud and the floods.

Thank God he did not do that, but persisted on. “History of the Rain is charming, wise and beautiful. Williams has convinced me that I should read every one of his books.

There is a saccharine quality to it, and the narrative is full of hyperboles , yet the voice remains fresh and not once I heard a cliché. I am so glad I read this book.

“There’s nothing direct about us,” says bedridden 19-year-old narrator Ruth Swain, speaking of the Irish, and the same is true of Williams’ ( …

Is it left as an x?

I received a copy of this book for free through Goodreads First Reads.

A rambling, soft-hearted Irish family saga stuffed with eccentricity, literature, anecdotes, mythology, humor and heartbreak, from the author of Four Letters of Love (1997). (Bloomsbury, 358 pages, $28.) Is it a cliche to call an Irish book lyrical? He also visits a sympathetic English teacher after trying on a drunken session, and when he keeps his date with Phoebe, who turns up with her suitcase to join him on his flight, he heads home to a hospital siege. The descriptions of Ireland were spot on and some of the observations of the people were laugh aloud funny.
