This developed into what has become to be known as "Camp Hardrock" which comprises the two weeks preceding the actual running of the event. This year Hardrock is open to everyone, and the Hardrock 100 Virtual Race Challenge is being offered with a full 100 mile / 33,000 foot option, along with a couple alternative options as well. The Official Hardrock Hundred Mile Endurance Run, or Hardrock 100, is an 100-mile ultramarathon run with 66,000 feet of elevation change at an average elevation of over 11,000 feet. The cut-off time for finishing the race is 48 hours. The race is dedicated to the memory of the miners who settled in the area and who built the mining trails on which much of the race is run. The 100 km course includes 4 major climbs that take a cumulative toll and takes place in an exposed Alpine environment that can be subject to sudden and severe changes in weather.

Our event gathers runners, volunteers, crew and more from around the world into small, isolated mountain communities.

Knowing the course could save a runner several hours over the duration of the run. To keep the overall number close to 145, the first 10 drops from any entrant list will not be filled. Each year the running field is limited to 140 qualifying candidates selected in early December by the race's Run Committee using a weighted lottery for all candidates except the previous years male and female winners.
